Although college itself is a challenge, there are many small things in it that are difficult. Starting with a class schedule to ensure adequate study and adequate sleep, it feels like a never ending race on the finish line: degrees. One particular challenge that we want to talk about today that is essential for your study is taking notes. Good notes to study for exams can make all the difference in your grades. If you have a hard time figuring out how to take good notes, this is for you. We’ve collected a few tips and tricks to get the best possible notes.
Don’t settle for less that your full potential. Writing notes by hand is always best because it helps the mind process the words further. Other than that, take notes during the lecture, but don’t stop there. Make sure you write what was not on the slide. Once you’re done, rewrite those notes while focusing on three things:
1. The material itself.
2. How the material connects with other elements.
3. The main idea of the material.
This will create a wider and more comprehensive picture of the elements for you.
If you are a visual learner, this is a great way to separate important points, names, places and any other details and make them easy to remember. Feel free to use as much color and highlighter as you want, as long as it is organized for you.
Another way to keep things organized when taking notes is to use headers. This will help you to understand better later than looking at a long block of text that you may not understand.
After class, or whenever you have time, slide your notes and compare them with books. See if you can miss anything during class and fill in any gaps you have.
Read the slides before class
If you take the time to skim the slides before class, you will have a better idea of what to expect in class. On top of that, by doing this you will know what you don’t have to write during class because you already know it’s on the slide. Also, the more times you read the material the better.
Don’t worry about appearance
If you’re not a visual learner, or you can only write so fast during a lecture, don’t worry about making your initial notes beautiful. Practice writing in small hands. This can be a waste of time to write the whole sentence. Just make sure you understand what you are writing, but when it comes to grammar, it doesn’t matter. You can always go back to the notes and do whatever you want with them.
And there you have it! You can take nice notes from now on. Now go and attend those classes!
